Kneeling with reverent bow, two young elephants bring with them the glowing light of tradition. Kittikorn designs this graceful pair, cast of ceramic and beautifully detailed. Embellished with brown accents, they each carry a candle. Kittikorn uses modern-day kilns and tools to recreate the ceramic artistry made famous by Sawankaloke artisans since the 12th century, in central Thailand. They used special kilns that were partially underground and reached such high temperatures it took days before the items had cooled enough for the artisans to handle. Kittikorn works with local clays and after hand-painting the item, he uses a glaze of feldspar and longan wood ashes dissolved in water.

Frolicking deep in the rainforest, pachyderms of all ages appear in bas relief. A symbol of Thailand, elephants were prized by royalty, and white elephants were destined for the king’s personal use. Chaiyong Prasertpan crafts this delightful scene on a candle with two wicks. He first researches his subject, because each of his candles is based on legends, stories or ancient art. After making a detailed sketch, he sculpts the piece in oily clay mixed with beeswax; from this model he casts a silicone mold, which he fills with molten wax and pigments. Because the colors may fade over time, Prasertpan recommends the candle be lit within one month after purchase.

An expressive and primitive frog (rana) design in aluminum repouss??? lurks on this notebook set by Javier Padilla. The striking fuchsia tone combines beautifully with the texture of the covers, elaborated by hand from natural oat fibers. These four pieces will prove invaluable to a personal daily routine. Says Padilla, “For all of those who are sensitive to the qualities of paper, I invite you to explore the possibilities of expression offered to us.” The creation process begins with the mixture of recycled paper and natural fibers. Once the color is added, the pulp is drained over a sieve and spread out in sheets on cotton cloth. A roller squeezes out any excess water and the covers are bound to the notebooks.
