Victoria Garc???a designs an imaginative pair of masks reminiscent of Peruvian festival tradition. Original and surreal, the masks feature just one eye; the irises hang like mystic pendulums. Garc???a finds inspiration in the masks worn by dancers during the feast of Our Lady of Candelaria, celebrated in the city of Puno. The ceramic masks are painted with engobe in the colors worn by the dancers.

Ceramic mask, ‘Virgin of Cocharcas’ (large)

With her eyes closed in meditation, the Virgin of Cocharcas is depicted in a reverent mask by Teofilo Aylas. Legend tells that a woman, who had injured her hand, was told to go to the town of Copacabana and request healing from the image of the Virgin Mary there. Although her hand got better by itself, nonetheless she continued to Copacabana to give thanks. In 1598, Sebastian Quimichi took the image to Cocharcas, where it is venerated to this day.

Linear features stare from a stylized mask. Transforming a mate gourd, Carlos Quinto creates a personage from the ancient Paracas culture. The civilization flourished on the Andean coasts some 500 years before the present era; their art was characterized by simplified, geometric shapes. The natural gourd dictates the final form of each piece, thus slight variations in shape and color should be expected.
